The party is organized by shop owners from Mercadão de Madureira (Madureira’s Big Market) who take a motorcade to Copacabana, where they perform rituals and deposit offerings for Yemanjá. Since 2003, the event happens every year on December 29th and is part of the official calendar of festivities in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
