The rally for direct elections, held at the Candelária Square, was the largest political demonstration in the history of Rio de Janeiro City until that moment. Attended by 1.2 million people who for 5 ½ hours heard the speeches of the main opposition leaders and watched shows by guest artists. The rally was closed by Leonel Brizola, Governor of Rio de Janeiro, who, after his speech, sang the National Anthem hand in hand with PMDB President, Congressman Ulysses Guimarães, along with the crowd.
