INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
Rio de Janeiro
25/11/2007

Launch of the Campaign "16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women". Created in 1991, the campaign starts on November 25th and ends on December 10th, on International Human Rights Day. It takes place every year, simultaneously, in 130 countries and the goal is to promote the debate and expose the various forms of violence against women. November 25th was established by the UN General Assembly as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. This day was chosen in honor of the sisters Patrícia, Minerva, and Maria Teresa, known as “Las Mariposas”, who had been brutally murdered by the Dominican Republic dictator Rafael Leônidas Trujillo, on this day in 1960.
