Celebration of Black Consciousness Day
Celebration of Black Consciousness Day
Rio de Janeiro
1988

Show at the Lapa Arches as part of the celebrations held for Black Consciousness Week. The celebrations, called  Kizomba- Festa, lasted for ten days and brought together delegations from South Africa, Angola, Congo, Cuba, the United States and Peru. There were poetry readings, music, singing and dancing. The event was the culmination of the 3rd International Black Art Meeting. The outdoor event included performances by artists like Martinho da Vila, Leci Brandão, Emílio Santiago and the group Amanda (from South Africa), among others. Since the 1970s the Black Consciousness Day has been celebrated on 20th November. Rio de Janeiro was a pioneer in establishing this date as a city holiday, in 1999. In 2002, governor Benedita da Silva sanctioned Law #4,007, which declared Black Consciousness Day a holiday in Rio de Janeiro State.
